Italy. It was in Noli, a small, seaside fishing village on the Ligurian coast, where we often vacationed with family and friends. Nestled in a calm bay, sheltered from the wind, we usually stayed at the hotel Albergo il Glicine. When we arrived that year, a booking issue caused us to be relocated to a modestly furnished apartment just next door. On the rooftop, a simple terrace\u2014whitewashed walls, sun-scorched floor\u2014was used mainly for drying laundry. That day, I climbed the narrow staircase to fetch our beach towels. As usual, we had planned to go for an evening swim. As I passed by the sunbed, I suddenly noticed how my shadow fell across it.
